Christopher Nolanhas his eye on Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale for his new film The Prestige, about rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. The film is based on an adaptation by Nolan's brother Jonathan of an eponymous Christopher Priest novel. Jonathan Nolan wrote the short story on which his brother's breakthrough movie Memento was based.
In the book, two magicians battle each other for trade secrets, with the rivalry becoming so intense that it eventually makes murderers of them both. The title refers to the impact made by a magician's successful trick. The movie will start shooting in January with a budget of about $40m (£23m) and will be distributed by Disney and Warner Bros.
Bale is currently in Thailand filming Rescue Dawn, about a US fighter pilot's struggle to survive after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam war. Jackman will be seen next in X-Men 3. He is also the star of Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, a science fiction tale from the maverick director of Pi and Requiem for a Dream. The film, which also stars Rachel Weisz, was completed in June but currently still has no official release date despite four years in development.
